Message From the President

Welcome to March, HRMA Members!
Our 75th anniversary year continued its strong start with the Annual Legal Update last month. A special thank you to all of our volunteers for putting on such a great event. With all the current and pending legislative changes on both a state and federal level we hope that the legal update helped get you up to speed!

March is always one of my favorite times of year. The days are getting longer and the sun is starting to thaw the winter freeze - plus, my wife, son and mom all have birthdays this month! There always seems to be many reasons for optimism this time of year, and not just for the Marino family. CNN recently published an article describing the "renaissance" currently happening in both St. Louis and Kansas City. This is the second national publication to tout St. Louis' growth in the past six months (here's the first one)! There are many reasons to be excited for our City!

On that note, here is our challenge - as St. Louis' largest and most well-established HR professional organization, what can we do to help build this momentum? One thing we have planned is the May 5, 2017 Missouri Human Resources Day of Service! HRMA is partnering with the National Association of African-American Human Resources (NAAAHR) and United Way to launch a single day when we can unite as professionals and give back to our community. We are looking to gather as many HR volunteers as possible to help St. Louis residents with things such as resume review, practice interviews and job hunting advice in general. If you are interested in volunteering for an hour or two on May 5th, please visit https://www.stlvolunteer.org/hr to register (there were some technical difficulties last month, but the website should be up and running now)! Many people in our community do not have access to the professional advice many of us take for granted and we would love to have our members share their expertise. This is the inaugural year for this event, so please help us make it a success. We'd love to make the MO HR Day of Service a state-wide event next year, but it all starts with us taking step one today!

Needless to say, it's important for us to think about the future while we celebrate HRMA's 75 year history. If you have any other ideas for HRMA, do not hesitate to bring them to your committees or to any of our Board Members. Every event put on by HRMA, including our Annual Conference, our Legal Update, and the MO HR Day of Service all started as simply a thought in someone's head, so do not hesitate to share them with us!

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

John Marino
