Message From the President

Spring has officially arrived and I am hopeful you all have a new spring in your step now that the cold is behind us.
This is my favorite time of year as we all come out of hibernation and enjoy all that the St. Louis area has to offer. Some of you grew up here while others may be transplants. Either way, I think you can agree we have so much to offer as a city.

With that said, the focus of my message for this month is Giving Back. We have already emphasized our 2019 theme of "Transforming Human Resources into Valued Experts" but now we are shifting to ways that you all can Give Back to your local communities, the HR profession and SHRM. As you know, this is a volunteer organization. We are grateful to each and every one of you for being a member but that appreciation is heightened to those of you who go above and beyond by volunteering on a committee and assist with maintaining our status as the preeminent SHRM-affiliated chapter in the Midwest.

We are currently accepting applications for our Spring Mentoring program. This is a perfect way for those of you who are established in your field of HR to give back to other members and the community at large. We all got to where we are with assistance from others and some may be in need of a little extra push which you can provide. All too often I think people are deterred when they hear ‘Mentoring' as it sounds like a time obligation few of us have available. Please keep in mind this can be as little as a few minutes each week and no more than a few hours each month. I encourage you to consider joining our effort and becoming a Mentor. Speaking of Giving Back, the 3rd Annual Missouri HR Day of Service is fast approaching on Friday, May 3rd. We are proud to be a presenting supporting of this effort in partnership with United Way, SMPHR and The Missouri State Council for SHRM. Join other HR Professionals in sharing your expertise by volunteering. Volunteer opportunities include leading presentations on a variety of HR topics for nonprofits, with emphasis on Minimizing Workplace Negativity and Building A Successful Workplace Team. Please visit www.stlvolunteer.org/hr to register for a volunteer opportunity.

As always, we want to hear from you. If you have suggestions, please let us know. If you want to get involved, please do not hold back. This organization is made stronger by each of you and we hope you know how grateful we are for your continued contributions and support.

Sincerely,
Tim Wells
2019 President
