Finance 101: Going Toe to Toe with Your CFO

In many organizations, upper management is unlikely to say "Hey, I think we should spend more on human resources." Conversations are quite the contrary. Human Resources (HR) as a department is generally a cost center; meaning it is an expense to the company and not a revenue-generating department. To get the budget HR needs, it is important to be fluent in "financial language". In this session, you will learn:
  • What is a cost center versus a profit center?
  • What is an expense and how does it relate to the financial results of the company?
  • Why does the finance team consider HR responsible for employee and employee-related expenses?
  • How does the timing and frequency of payroll affect financial reporting?
  • What information can the HR Department provide to other departments to enhance the budgeting process?
  • Why is HR the last department created in a small or start-up company and the last funded or expanded in a large organization?
About Our Speaker
Lyndee Downs is the Chief Financial Officer of SOH Dental, a start-up Dental Support Organization with revenue in excess of $30 million in less than two years. As CFO, Lyndee has been leading the company's legal, financial, and human resource compliance initiatives, while also establishing a real estate entity for managing the company's leases and buildings in six states.

Prior to joining SOH Dental, Lyndee was consulting with companies in a variety of industries after leaving a position of CFO of a healthcare company operating in 14 states. She has been the top financial executive for other companies in healthcare and insurance; an industry she enjoyed for over 16 years.

Lyndee has been an adjunct instructor at Washington University for over 18 years; teaching financial and managerial accounting courses. She has taught graduate level accounting at Washington University and healthcare finance for the Master's in Healthcare Administration at Webster University. She has written and taught seminars, such as "Finance and Budget Fundamentals for IT Professionals" to Fortune 500 attendees.

To balance the complexities of her professional life, Lyndee travels internationally, SCUBA diving, motorcycling and boating, under both power and sail.
